This is the first of several articles that will give some in depth description of the main features of the Isle of Gron.
It is often helpful for players to have some idea of why and how enemies are spawned. The Isle of Gron uses a custom spawn system, that executes each time a character enters an area. If that area has not previously been disturbed, the system determines the total levels in the party and compares this with the Area Band Level to determine what level of challenge to deliver. It then visits each spawn site (waypoint) and creates creatures based on this challenge calculation.
There are 5 area band levels (we will put up a map soon). They run as follows:
Band 1: levels 1-5
Band 2: levels 6-12
Band 3: levels 13-20
Band 4: levels 21-30
Band 5: levels 31-40
Each spawn point will spawn random creatures from one of several pre-difined groups. If the parties total levels fall in the right range then the challenge should be well matched. If the party exceeds the Band maximum, then the spawn will be capped to that limit. If the party is under the band minimum then the spawn will be the minimum for that Area Band Level.
As all spawns in the area are generated when the area is first entered you should never see creatures appear out of nowhere (falling from the sky) - though they may use stealth or invisibility to surprise you.
If you enter an area and you see the message "Fellow travellers have left signs of their passing through this area. Enemies may be on alert, or allready have fled." It means the spawns have allready happened, based on another character. If you are the first in your party to come this way, and you are headed away from Gron Village you may be walking into a nasty ambush. On the other hand you may find the area allready looted.
A short while after the last PC leaves, (currently about 10 mins) the area is wiped (if there are no PCs in it) and the process restarts.
If you find a spawn that seems consistently badly matched, report it in the bugs section along with your character class and level, your level of experience with NWN and why you think the creatures were a bad match. If for example, you are in an appropriate area and you can't damage the creatures or they kill you with a single blow, that would indicate a bug (badly calculated CR or a spell or effect that shouldn't be there.)
If you have any suggestions for improving the way the Isle of Gron Spawn System works, or any other comments, post them here.
